  • Campus Safety - Time To Prepare For On Campus Life

Does the thought of walking in a dark parking lot alone at night frighten you? If the situation should occur, do you feel confident and prepared to respond to an attacker? Sgt. Darren Laur and his wife Beth began teaching self-defense classes and leading safety seminars in 1993, providing instruction and training for thousands of women. Their concern for women’s safety led to the Laurs writing their newly published book, Total Awareness: A Woman’s Safety Book. Inside this book are ten essential safety tips that every woman should know in order to ensure greater personal safety.

    1. 1. Awareness:

Being observant and taking note of your surroundings is your first line of defense. While most women think of kicks to the groin and blocking punches when they hear the term self-defense, the best way to protect yourself is to avoid physical contact entirely. Being aware of your surroundings will allow you to anticipate a dangerous situation and circumvent the problem before it happens. Criminals are more likely to choose a victim who appears unaware of what is happening around them.

    1. 2. Use your sixth sense.

The “sixth sense” refers to an innate discernment you may have that lets you know something is wrong. The subconscious can provide powerful insight into a situation but very few people pay much attention it. Learn to “trust your gut” and avoid persons or situations that don’t feel right.

    1. 3. Self-defense training.

Before signing up for any self-defense program make sure you do a little research first and follow these two tips:

    1)     Avoid martial arts studios if you are looking for simple defense techniques and not prepared for a long term commitment. Many of these programs teach techniques that are complex and unrealistic during the typical attacks women encounter.

    2)     Make sure the self-defense program includes simulated assaults of realistic rape and attack scenarios so that you get to practice what you learn and adapt to the adrenaline rush.

  • Bad New Bears - June and July Are Busy Bear Months

Bear encounters are on the rise as we move from Spring into Summer.  Bears are showing up in the most unexpected places like your backyard, your bird feeders, your garbage and even your gardens.

    Black Bear

We can all sympathize with these poor beasts. Humans have encroached on their territory in almost every state. And with the aid of today’s technologies human go deeper and deeper into the wild. The best way to avoid an encounter is to avoid them. But that is becoming increasingly more difficult to do when the bears are roaming the streets and visiting our backdoors.

    th2SYQE2EN

Whether in your backyard or in the woods, most bear encounters result from the fact the bear is either protecting its territory, its young or looking for food. If a bear attacks it has either been provoked or is being predatory. Both situations are very dangerous.

Information abounds from experts in the field on bear behavior and ways to protect yourself if you are caught in the unenviable position of coming face to face with a bear. Most of us, unless we are outdoors enthusiasts, naturalists, hunters or adventurers, would not expect to encounter a bear in our daily lives but the headlines prove that assumption wrong. It could happen anywhere. Understanding bear behavior could save your life.

You could also save your life by being proactive and preparing for a bear encounter. Other than avoidance, the two most recommended solutions are guns or bear repellant. Both have their pros and cons. Let’s state the obvious. Guns are illegal in many places and unless you are a very good shot and have a high powered weapon, a shot from a gun does not usually drop a bear. A wounded bear can continue to run and attack. On the other hand, a direct hit from bear repellant usually stops the bear in his tracks. Bear repellant is easier to aim and shoot and, although very effective, is non-lethal. Pepper spray or bear mace will not cause permanent damage to the bear.

    Bear Repellent

Bear sprays contain natural and chemical components which cause immediate inflammation of tissues on contact with eyes, nose and bare skin. You should aim for a bear’s face or use a back and forth motion to lay down a field of spray directly in the bear’s on-coming path to give maximum exposure to the bear’s face. The resulting inflammation and irritation of the eyes, nose and lungs is immediate and causes the bear to focus on his face instead of on your face. The normal bear reaction is stop and/or retreat giving you time to get to safety.

  • The Flower Pot Safe

Mike snickered. Sometimes his sister, Beth, had the craziest ideas. Mike was at Beth's home helping her to put her affairs back into order after her husband's death.  Today, he was photographing her valuables for insurance purposes.  Beth had taken out a new policy and she wanted to keep her own records.

After Mike was finished with the pictures and preparing to head home, Beth asked him to wait -- she had two more items to photograph.  She then pulled her wedding and engagement ring from inside the flower pot that held her Easter Lilies -- the same pot that held Poinsettias last December. Mike was humored and asked her about her choice of hiding places.

     Flower Pot Diversion Safe

Beth generally kept the flower pot sitting on the kitchen counter when it contained flowers, and on the top shelf next to other empty pots when it didn't.  Mike told her that he thought the flower pot safe was an odd place for her to keep her most beloved possessions.  But, there they sat, right out in the open.

But Beth explained that the flower pot safe was, in fact, the safest place for her treasures.  So safe, that her rings had recently eluded a burglar and a dishonest cousin.  The burglar had found the silverware and the cousin recently took a fair amount of cash out of Beth's wall safe.  The rings were not touched.  She asked Mike, "Where would a burglar or a thief look first?"  After thinking about it for a moment, Mike had to admit that if he were a burglar, he wouldn't even think to look for valuables in a flower pot.  He was pretty certain that a burglar would go through drawers and closets, or break into any obvious safe he or she came across.

As Mike drove home, he thought about the various reasons a flower pot safe, or any diversion safe, would be useful. He lived in a low crime area, but he had a lot of company and so did his three teenage boys.  You'd like to believe that you can trust everyone, but the reality is that you simply can't.

Once he arrived home, Mike ordered two flower pot safes of his own.

    Should you?

  • Violence Against Women Is On The Rise

I was recently looking around the Internet for news on assaults against women for a research paper and came across a release by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

What are the types of violence against women?

Behaviors included in the broad category of violence against women include homicide, intimate partner abuse, psychological abuse, dating violence, same-sex violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, date rape, acquaintance rape, marital rape, stranger rape and economic abuse. The effects of this violence can negatively affect a woman’s reproductive health, as well as other aspects of her physical and mental well-being. Long-term risks include chronic pain, physical disability, drug and alcohol abuse and depression. Women with a history of physical or sexual abuse also have an increased risk for unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The vast majority of violence against females is perpetrated by males.

You can read the article by clicking on this link.

What can you do if you are assaulted and how can you protect yourself.  One way is to carry a stun gun or pepper spray. You can buy these items from this web store. Just click on stun guns or pepper spray in the left column of the home page.

  • Spring Is Here-It is Bear Season

Evidently June is bear month.  Here are just a few of the June 2012 headlines:

    • Payson, Arizona – two attacks in one week

    • British Colombia, Canada – man attacked while in his hot tub at home

    • Cape Cod, Massachusetts – rare sighting of animal roving Cape Cod

    • Boulder , Colorado – animal roaming campus of University of Colorado

    • Greenwich, New Jersey – bear wandering neighborhood

    • Grafton, New Hampshire – woman attached at her back door

    • Manchester, New Hampshire – found wandering streets of Manchester

We can all sympathize with these poor beasts.  Humans have encroached on their territory in almost every state.  And with the aid of today’s technologies human go deeper and deeper into the wild.  The best way to avoid an encounter is to avoid them.  But that is becoming increasingly more difficult to do when the bears are roaming the streets and visiting our backdoors.

Not every situation is perfect for bear repellants.  If the wind is blowing in your face, don’t spray.  If the temperatures are well below freezing, your spray may not work properly.  And remember, you must be carrying your spray in a readily available place; your hand or on your belt comes to mind.  Don’t bury it in your pack.  In these situations fall back on your research and choose the most compatible non-intervention strategy for your situation.  If nothing comes to mind, fall to the ground, curl up in a ball to protect you head and neck, play dead, and remain still.

When it is a choice between becoming bear lunch or being a proactive self-defender, choose to protect yourself.   Don’t be lunch!

There are several makes and models of bear repellents but two of the most popular are Mace Bear Spray and Guard Alaska®.

Mace Bear Spray is a safe, humane pepper Mace bear spray.  The powerful magnum fogger delivers an extreme blast that may reach up to 30 feet.

Guard Alaska® Bearspray is an ultra-hot pepper spray proven so effective at repelling bears, it is the only one registered with the EPA as a repellent for all species of bear!
